Community Visit 2024: Supporting Special Needs Children in Ibadan

Playing with children Reading stories together Donating clothes and books Group activity

What We Did

We visited a local orphanage in Ibadan that cares for children with special needs. We spent time connecting with the children, starting with the girls before joining the whole group. We spoke to them using simple terms to keep things clear and understandable, and to make sure every child felt included.

We also played games and read stories together to spark their imaginations. To support their education and daily needs, we gave out free notebooks, storybooks, and bags of clothes from our recent donation drive.

Why We Did It

We undertook this visit as part of our regular community engagement to support vulnerable groups who often receive less attention. Children with special needs require not just material support but also consistent social interaction and mental stimulation. We wanted to provide a sense of belonging, joy, and tangible resources to help improve their quality of life.

The Impact

By combining social interaction with material donations, this visit likely provided a significant morale boost for the children and practical relief for the caregivers. Reading and playing with the children helps foster social skills, and the donated items give them the resources they need for comfort and learning.

“It is rare to see visitors who sit down to actually read and play with the children like this. The clothes and books are wonderful, but the time you spent with them is what they will remember most.”

“I really like the new storybook. The pictures are nice, and I can’t wait to read more of it.”

— Tolu, a future medical doctor
